JOBIT: Hurley, Garrett Frank [MC1967 RIP] on 2016-Jan-21




HURLEY, GARRETT FRANK Age 71, passed away on January 21, 2016, at his home on the South Side.

Garrett was the proud father of Michael Lambert Hurley (Sarah Marie Conklin) of Meadville, PA, and Ian Patrick Hurley of Boston, MA; doting grandfather of Liam Robert and Owen Bradley Hurley; and lifelong friend of his former wife of 32 years, Doreen Sayers Hurley.

He was born in Belmont, MA, the son of the late Robert Lambert Hurley and Gabrielle LaBonté Hurley. Garrett graduated from Manhattan College in New York City in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics and began his military service aboard the U.S. Navy’s experimental hydrofoil ship, PCH-1 Highpoint.

Garrett’s business career began as a financial analyst with Shell Oil in Houston, and continued with positions with Amerada Hess, W.R. Grace and Company and U.S. Steel. Garrett completed the corporation’s Advanced Management Program in 1985.

At his retirement in 2007 he was President of USS Real Estate. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to lead one of U.S. Steel’s largest philanthropic gifts in company history, the Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama, in collaboration with the Freshwater Land Trust.

Prior to retirement he was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, PA serving as chair of the finance committee and on the building committee, as well as being involved in many outreach ministries. He also served as treasurer of the Wesley Institute.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed reading, painting, traveling, and his many friends at Fat Head’s Saloon on the South Side, where he was designated a “Founding Father” of Beer Camp.

Garrett is also survived by his brother, Ian Robert Hurley of New York City and nieces, Kate Hurley, Anna Hurley Ceraso, and Wendy Rehnberg, nephew, Matthew Verey Sayers, Kenneth William and Rose Sayers, Sue Hurley, and many dear friends.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jubilee Kitchen, 2005 Wyandotte St., Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Henry Popowski Jr.

Henry S. Popowski, Jr., 70, cherished Father of three, beloved husband, and Son of the late Henry Popowski, Sr. and Nellie Popowski, was called to Heaven on December 31st, 2015 after a long battle with cancer.

Born on September 19th, 1945, Henry grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Manhattan College. He used his intellect, charisma, and dedicated work ethic to become a successful business executive in the manufacturing industry before retiring in 2001.

In retirement, Henry moved to Wellington, Florida and kept busy, picking up real estate, participating in the neighborhood association, and spending time with his family.

There was nothing more important to Henry than his family. He treasured his wife of 46 years and their children, and was incredibly proud of everything that they accomplished.

He will be remembered as a kind and giving man with a big heart, who would do anything to help his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Wellington, Florida, daughter Cristina and her husband Frank Griffin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and his two sons, Alan and his wife Christina Popowski of Newtown, Connecticut and Brian and his wife Heather Popowski of Wellington, Florida. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Ava and Samantha Popowski. There will be a private service for him at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the Popowski family requests that donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.

John G. Hoare

John G. Hoare of Yorktown Heights passed away on October 12, 2015.

He was 69 years old. John worked in finance at the Wildlife Conservatory Society. He was born in 1945 in the Bronx, NY, to John and Mary Hoare. John served in the Armed Forces in Vietnam and did his post-graduate studies in public administration.

He will be remembered for his caring manner and compassion for his family and others.

He is survived by his wife, Robby, his daughters, Allyson and Lesley and his grandchildren, Bradley and Tucker. He was well-loved and will be truly missed.

Calling hours are Monday, October 19th from 2 – 4pm and 7 – 9pm at Clark Funeral Home in Yorktown Heights. The Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, October 20th, 10:30am, at New St. Patrick’s Church in Yorktown Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind – Autism Dog Program.

Joseph “Frank” Hackett
(1932 – 2015)

Joseph “Frank” Hackett peacefully joined his loved ones in Heaven on October 2, 2015 after a brief illness with Cancer of the lung.

He was born Nov. 5, 1932 in Bronx, NY to Thomas and Nellie (McGarry) Hackett (Both from Ireland). He married Florence Gear in 1955 and saw the birth of Thomas, Maureen and Joseph. After her demise in 1961,with the help of family he raised the three children himself. In 1971, he married Eileen Costello in Richmond Hill, NY and they added Timothy and Kevin to the family.

He served in the Marine Corps, pst Division, 7th Regimen during the Korean War. He graduated from Manhattan College and worked 35 years for Union Carbide Corp., Eveready Battery Div. and Ralston Purina as a Sales Rep.

In 1990, after retiring, the family moved from Wall Township, NJ to Palm Desert and opened Marblelife of Palm Springs, a marble restoration business, later known as Marblecare.

He enjoyed playing baseball growing up, and later coached his sons in baseball and basketball. An avid, and sometimes frustrated NY Giant football fan, Sunday was his day to get the “Giant” headache.

He loved to tell stories and sing “Danny Boy”. He enjoyed reading, going to the casino, vacationing in Cabo San Lucas and especially the trip to Ireland to see his relatives.

He is predeceased by his brother Thomas, sisters Elinore (Eastman), Rita (Kirwin) and son, Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Eileen; children Maureen (Bender), Joseph, Timothy, Kevin (Tamara) Hackett; and grandchildren Thomas, James, Daniel, Rylie and Haydin.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Palm Desert on Oct. 16 at 10am preceded by the Rosary at 9:30. A reception will follow at Chaparral Country Club. He will be buried at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt, NJ. on Oct. 24th. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to School Sisters of Notre Dame, Wilton, CT., 06897 or Maryknoll Sisters of St, Dominic, Maryknoll, NY,10545.

JOBIT: Feeney, George [MC1967 RIP]




George Feeney Career DEA special agent with assignments in US and abroad, Marine lieutenant in Vietnam and Army Reserve officer, of Montclair, 70

George Feeney, 70 of Montclair, N.J., formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y. died on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in New York Presbyterian Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Montclair. Interment is at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Visiting will be on Friday, March 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Caggiano Memorial, 62 Grove St., Montclair, caggianomemorial.com.

George was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and attended St. Francis Prep and ROTC at Manhattan College. He served as a first lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion/4th Marines in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart. In 1977, George joined the U.S. Army Reserve and retired as lieutenant colonel in 2001.

Highlights of his 30 years as a special agent with Drug Enforcement Administration include assignments with the regional office in Manhattan, Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey; as group supervisor in Houston, Texas; D.E.A. liaison to the Office of the U.S. Vice President in Washington, D.C.; team leader in Operation Snowcap in Peru; D.E.A. liaison to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Pentagon, and a return to the New York Regional Office as supervisory special agent, from where he retired in 2001.

George served as adjunct professor of criminal justice at John Jay College in New York City. In 2005, he was awarded a commendation from the Civilian Police Assistance Training Team for his accomplishments at the Adnan Training Facility in the Green Zone of Baghdad.

George is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (nee Ashley); his children, Gail Poirier (Guy), MariClare Gaidsick (Chris), Meghan Getgood (John), and Michael (Alison), and 10 precious grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Maureen Hill Feeney, in 1971.
