Obituary for Jennifer Harding McGeown

Jennifer Harding McGeown – Devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend, lost her long battle with cancer on May 5, 2019.

Jennifer was one tough nut to crack and she gave the cancer and everyone else around her a run for their money. It provided her the opportunity to remove her pain in the ass and her colon. She grew up in Roslyn Heights, attending St. Mary’s and the Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset. Jen was an excellent athlete, organizer and volunteer, skills she brought to Manhattan College, where she played softball. Her career took her into educational, care and athletic based settings, when she landed at Pierce Country Day as a devoted employee.

Jennifer appreciated the support and kindness given to her by the Pierce Family. What Jennifer loved the most was family. At the top of the list were her girls, Emma and Maureen. Jennifer provided them with love, encouragement and an example of bravery and courage to carry them through life.

She was a devoted daughter to T. Peter and the late Patricia and a sister who could always be counted on for a good wisecrack to Maura Clow (Harry), Ted (Jenny), Tim (Jeanine) and Meaghan Tuttle (Ryan). Jennifer loved her many aunts and uncles and cousins, and could always be counted on to “bring the weenies” and take pictures to make sure everyone would remember our times together. Jennifer was a loyal friend and will be missed by many.

Visitation Wednesday 4:00-9:00PM at Roslyn Heights Funeral Home 75 Mineola Ave. Roslyn Heights, NY. Funeral Mass Thursday 10:00AM at St. Mary’s RC Church Roslyn Harbor, NY. Private cremation to follow.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to Our Lady of Mercy Academy, 815 Convent Road, Syosset, NY 11791. Donations are designated for tuition assistance. Checks should be made out to Our Lady of Mercy Academy.

JNEWS: Sullivan, Rob [MC1991 RIP] remembered

TimmyDaddy: Be kind, be helpful, love and be loved

Rob Sullivan
By Tim Sullivan

*** begin quote ***

I am writing this on Father’s Day. Our tradition of breakfast in bed gave way to the new Waffle House in downtown Decatur. It was the kid’s idea (which frankly, seems to be an alarming trend for Father’s Day activities) but we all enjoyed it.

The day has drifted along – bike riding for Kristen and Margo, soccer in the park for me and Elliott, errands, baseball practice in the early evening. I even flexed my dad muscles by reading the New York Times and watching the U.S. Open. But I keep coming back to thoughts of my brother Rob.

Rob’s wake and funeral last month must have set some sort of Catholic Church attendance record. Do they keep stats? The three wake sessions were hardly enough for the throngs of people who came through. His funeral filled St. Agnes Cathedral for the first time since 9/11. Robert Jr.,16, gave a poignant and mature eulogy buttressed on either side by his siblings Caitlin,14, and Patrick, 12. It could not have been written or delivered without the gift of time that Rob gave Suzanne and the kids. He took a dire diagnosis and somehow stretched it out for six-and-a-half years like it was an entirely negotiable contract.

*** and ***

One attendee said he worked with Rob at Verizon many years ago. He was younger than my brother, but a fellow Manhattan College alum so Rob took him under his wing. He beamed when he spoke about how Rob was the most intelligent guy in the department and also the most patient and helpful. He felt so fortunate to have known and worked with Rob and he just wanted me to know that. And now I am so thankful to know that.

[JR: Argh! Would it do any good if I command that my fellow Jaspers are NOT allowed to cut in line for the Pearly Gates. I’d volunteer to sub in. But we have so many many politicians and bureaucrats who we can well afford to go first. Requiescat In Pacem  ]
